The Icky Guest Bathroom is No More!

For this post, the title says it all. So the last room we renovated was probably the ickiest. It had a weird mirrored medicine cabinet, an awkward sized vanity, and a sponge-painted linoleum floor that had stars imprinted in it...Icky. Every time I walked by it, I didn't even want to look at it, but here's a reminder for you...

See...? Gross. Nothing else in the house really bothered me except this bathroom, which is why I'm not sure why we waited so long to renovate it. However, over the last few weeks we had to get it finished because we were having family stay during race weekend. This room had quite a bit more work because we knew that there was a leak prior to moving in so we weren't sure what was going to be hidden under that lovely flooring. Sure enough, there was another layer of linoleum flooring and some rotting sub-floor under the toilet. However we were able to cut this out and replace it pretty easily, and lay new porcelain tile. We also ripped out the awkward vanity (The space on either side was just a dirt trap. Ew!) and built a new one that went wall to wall (There will be more to come on that in the DIY section soon) Then added a vanity top that I found on craiglist for only $30!! (Seriously, you can find some great deals if you know how to look for them) After it was all said and done, we had a fabulous lime green bathroom...Check it out!!

I'm thrilled with how it turned out!!! Its exactly what I thought it would look like, and we were able to put our own spin on it by designing and building the vanity. We kept the color scheme that was in the apartment, but I added the details with goodwill and craigslist finds to keep us on budget (especially since it was the last room to go...)

I'm definitely glad we are finally finished with all the renovations because the dust and tools everywhere get old. Now it's onto some relaxation and some small DIY projects I've got (and the weekly Goodwill-ing of course!) That's all for now...but one last look for the road.

The Dining Room...It's For Special Occasions

So the dining room has been done since we moved in, but I realized that I hadn't posted any pictures of it! (Shame on me...) The room has an awesome tray ceiling, but when we got the house, the entire room was primed. And I'm pretty sure there was pink paint showing through the primer... (Seriously, was there not a room that wasn't pink at some point in time?!?) I knew that I wanted 2colors in this room with chair rail in the middle, but I also though I wanted wainscoting or bead board on the bottom. However, after some pricing, I realized that I didn't need this, but we still did 2 colors.

Here's a reminder of how "pretty" primer can be (especially on a tray ceiling)...

Very boring, and very white, with an inappropriate light fixture for a dining room. However, with a little paint, some chair rail, and a new chandelier, we ended up with a beautiful dining room. Take a look!!

Yes, it does have an arched doorway from the hall, which I love so I decided to include it when I took this photo. We decided to continue the green into the dining room because they are adjoining room, and we had enough paint left over from the kitchen island to use it in here as well!! (The funnier thing is that the walls and the island don't even look like the same color!) In addition to being able to reuse the paint from the kitchen island, we were also able to reuse the paint from the family on the bottom half of the wall.

Thank goodness for extra paint. It makes all the rooms flow very nicely together, and we didn't have to buy extra paint just to paint half of a wall. It worked out perfectly!!

The Extra Guest Bedroom

When most people find out that we have a 5 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath house, there first question is usually "What are you going to do with all that space??" Well right now it allows us to have our own space (his man cave and my craft room) and 2 extra bedrooms. Yes, it's a lot of space, but it's great!

Even though we don't really have enough furniture to fill the 2nd extra bedroom, I still wanted to paint it and put the futon in there so it's not just an empty room. (Besides, there is just something nice about a newly painted room, especially when it was just gross, flat, white paint before...)

It took a while to decide on a color, but we finally went with a burnt orange color, which I love! Take a look...

It definitely was not much to look at before, with the dirty white walls and blue star light. But now, it's bright and cheerful, even though it lacks the proper furniture. We'll get there eventually, but for now it works just fine. As you can see, there is also a vanity in here. This actually goes with the bedroom set in the other guest bedroom, but there isn't quite enough space for it. We found it a home in here and I recovered the bench to coordinate. (There will be more about that process in my DIY section soon so stay tuned for that update)

I'm thrilled with the color and how it all came together!!

The Man Cave

So do you all remember the Pepto-Bismal Pink and Maroon Red bonus room that was above the garage??? Well, it was really "pretty." Before we even bought the house, the hubby claimed it as his "man cave" (I'm still not sure how I agreed to this because he's got 3 times the room I've got, but I went along with it. Here's a refresher of how it looked before we did anything...

                                 

Before we did anything else, we expanded the closet so we could have more storage space. As you can see, there is barely enough room to even hang some clothes, but I wanted to use this space for all the extra "stuff" that we have.

                                 

Somehow, I forgot to take a picture of the final closet before we painted and added furniture, but we'll move on from that and reveal the amazing outcome!! 

Well, what do you think?? Hubby loves it and I'm glad it all finally came together. We took the plunge and purchased the sectional to help fill up the space and transform it into his theater (Yes, there is a 60" flat screen television in front of the couch.) It was more work than any of us expected, but it all worked out and now I've got my storage and he's got his man cave.

We're Finally Finished!

Sorry for the very long hiatus, but it's been very busy here at the house trying to get some things accomplished and finished! And I am very proud to announce that we have successfully completed every room in the entire house, in only 8 months!! Now don't get me wrong, there are still some small touch-ups/fixes/projects left to do, but every room is painted and functional. **Sigh of relief** I don't know about you, but in my opinion, living in dust, tools, and renovation is not a fun experience. We were able to keep it to a minimum, but after a while it gets old. But that's enough of my venting, and now it's time to show you what we've been up to!

It Actually Looks Like a Guest Bedroom and Not a College Apartment

Recently, my mom and I painted one of our two guest bedrooms (we've actually painted both now, but only one has furniture in it). I joked before we painted it that it looked like a college apartment, mostly because the walls had flat, white paint on them, and it was decorated with a futon pulled out as a bed and storage crates as the nightstand (I know what you're thinking, but that room was definitely not my top priority when we moved into the house). But now, it is such a cute guest bedroom!

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the luxurious futon and storage crates, but I do have a picture of the room before paint and furniture so we'll start with that...

It's definitely not much to look at, but it is a nice sized room. However, with a little paint and some free (and beautiful!) hand-me down furniture (MUCH Thanks go to my Aunt and Uncle for remodeling their guest rooms and giving us the furniture they didn't want) it turned into a wonderful guest bedroom! Take a look...

The bedding I got on a super sale at work (it's definitely helpful working for a retailer that sells cute merchandise to decorate with!) The artwork above the bed is actually some photographs that the hubby took. I LOVE original pieces so I just used some simple frames to make the photographs really speak for themselves, and it turned out amazing!

Don't you like how the upgrade from the college furniture turned out?? We sure do!

Builder Grade Closet Turned Massive Walk-In...A Girl's Dream

Alright, so earlier this weekend, I posted about how my hubby decided to tear into the teeny tiny closet in our bonus room and make it into a massive walk-in closet for storage. Well, the framing is up as well as some drywall so the teeny tiny closet is definitely no more. Now it is about 5 1/2 ft by 8 ft, which is a girl's dream! (If only it was our closet...) It will actually be used for random storage that we need so it will mainly consist of shelving, but here's the progress we made this weekend...

Big change right?? I'm excited to see it all come together, and I even get a new overhead light for the closet!! (Thank goodness for the fact that both the Fathers can do some electrical work!)

We're hoping to get the rest of the drywall on the outside done early this week, then the new electrical work will be done. This is consist of moving the plug that is currently inside the closet to the outside wall of the closet and adding in wiring for an overhead light inside the closet. More later as we progress through this project...
