I know, I know...more storage projects, but who doesn't want more storage in the kitchen?? (Especially after you get all those cool gadgets when you get married) That's where this project came into play. We had a funny wall in the kitchen that had a weird cut out, but lucky for us, that cut out was exactly the depth of upper kitchen cabinets! We decided to add a custom wine bar/cabinet along one side of the kitchen where this cut out was.
To do so, we bought two unfinished stock kitchen cabinets from Menard's. Now, we knew this wouldn't stretch across the entire wall, but we also wanted to add a wine rack in this same area.
Once we decided the configuration of the cabinet (cabinet, wine rack, cabinet) we built a base for the entire cabinet out of 2x4's which brought these cabinets to the same height as the original cabinets. After we attached both of the stock cabinets to the base, the hubby built the center wine rack. We did this with 1/4 inch thick pieces of oak plywood, with one cut to form the X shape in the center of each box. We also put a piece of the plywood between each X section for create 4 defined sections in each box.
After it was all put together, we glued and caulked the entire thing and added a countertop that matched the rest of the kitchen. Then, we added a kick board, quarterround, and some small trim pieces to finish it off. The whole thing for a couple coats of semi-gloss white kitchen and bath paint, and it matched the rest of the cabinets perfectly!
This is after the glue was applied. The paint cans were a nice touch to keep a consistent weight on all the boards.
This was after the countertop and trim was added, and by the way...painting the wine rack was definitely a task. I had to paint my way out of each triangle to keep the amount of paint on my hands minimal.
This is the final result! Doesn't it look wonderful??
